When to Seek Emergency Care

Don’t shrug off your symptoms, they could be a sign of an eye injury and leaving it alone could cause further damage. Seek emergency care if you are experiencing the following symptoms after an eye injury:

  • Sudden vision loss
  • Unexplained eye pain or redness
  • Nausea, vomiting, or headache with eye pain
  • Scratch in the eye
  • Exposure to chemicals in the eye

Common Eye Emergencies

There are several ways that the delicate tissue of the eye can become injured, but there are a few common eye injuries to be aware of and that require medical attention.

If you have experienced any of these emergencies or think you need immediate eye care, please contact Verona Vision Care immediately at 608-848-5168.

Foreign Object

A foreign object in the eye is anything that is not supposed to be in there. This could be small items like dirt, dust, debris, or even pieces of metal, wood, or plastic. The important thing about getting a foreign object in the eye is that you don’t try to remove it yourself if it is large or embedded in the eye.

It is also important not to rub your eye if you have a foreign object stuck there. This can cause damage to the eye and scratch the cornea.

Dealing with red, irritated eyes can put a damper on your day. These symptoms can be caused by a variety of factors, including allergies, irritants like dust or smoke, or even dry eye. If you’re experiencing persistent eye problems, it’s important to see a doctor to determine the cause and get the right treatment.

In the meantime, there are steps you can take to soothe your tired eyes, like using cool compresses or artificial tears. You can also try identifying and avoiding potential triggers, such as allergens or harsh chemicals.

Chemical injury to the eye is any solid, liquid, powder, or aerosol chemicals that get embedded into the eye. This can be anything from household cleaners, gardening products, ammonia, bleach, and more.

While damage with a chemical injury can occur within 5 minutes, it is usually surface damage. It is important to see a doctor as soon as possible to have us properly flush out any chemicals out of the eye and assess any damage.

A corneal abrasion refers to a scratch on the surface of the eye, also known as the cornea. A corneal abrasion can happen when a sharp foreign object gets into the eye and causes micro-cuts.

If you are feeling pain after getting an object in your eye, seek emergency care. If a corneal abrasion is not treated, it could lead to an infection.

Flashes and floaters can be a common occurrence as we age. They happen when the vitreous gel, a jelly-like substance in your eye, breaks down and casts tiny shadows on your retina, the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye.

While occasional flashes and floaters are usually nothing to worry about, sometimes, they can be a sign of a retinal detachment. This serious condition occurs when the retina pulls away from the wall of your eye, potentially leading to vision loss.

If you experience a sudden increase in flashes and floaters, especially accompanied by a curtain-like shadow in your vision, seek medical attention immediately
